A place entrenched in the lap of nature where we can get mental peace, sublime feelings, and a sense of oneness with God is known as the “Naimisharanya” Kshetra. Here the jagged edges of the “Manomay Chakra” are worn away and become blunt and one learns to lead a harmonious and wholesome life. Pious deeds and thoughts through chanting the name of God, learning moral values, life skills, experiential teaching/learning, etc. are earnestly practiced here.
Naimisharanya or the Naimisha forest is an ancient forest mentioned in the Mahabharata and the Puranas. It lies on the banks of the Gomti River of Uttar Pradesh, about 90 kms from Lucknow. The narration of the current version of Mahabharata that we have today took place at Naimisharanya during a conclave of sages headed by Saunaka, who gathered for a 12-year long sacrifice. In this conclave, Ugrasrava Sauti narrated the entire Mahabharata. According to Varaha Purana, there used to live a Rishi named Gauramukha who had obtained a divine crystal (Divya Mani) from Vishnu A Danava called Durjaya, with his Akshauhini army. He wanted to take that jewel by force. Vishnu destroyed, Durjaya and his vast army using his Chakra, in a minute, and as he wished, the place came to be known as Naimisharanya even today, there is an ancient well called Chakra Tirtha and a temple in Naimisharanya dedicated to Vishnu, and is considered one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples. The temple is counted as one of the eight temples of Vishnu that self-manifested and is classified as Swayamvyaktha Kshetra. It is considered to be the Ashrama of Rishi Dadhichi, who is believed to have given away his life here to donate his bones for the creation of Indra’s weapon Vajra, which the latter used to kill Vritrasur. As per another legend, once upon a time, this world was under evil influences; thoughts and the deeds of the people were corrupted. This made some saints apprehensive and they approached Lord Brahma and demanded a pious place, where there would be no fear of evil spirits, no grief or pain. Then Lord Brahma created a chakra, which was a Manomay Chakra, and asked them to follow it and stop at that place, where its jagged edges either become blunt or broke down, that would be the most pious place and center of knowledge, science, and academic meditation. So the Saints did the same and in this way “Naimisharanya” was created.

भविष्यति यथार्थं वै ब्राह्मणानां विशेषकम् ॥- Lord Shri Swaminarayan
The distinguished Acharya of Rigveda, Shri Shaunak was the Kulguru of the “Naimisharanya Vidyalaya” where thousands of saints under his leadership ran different sessions for the prosperity of the Nation. Hence we can say “Naimisharanya” is synonymous with the “Centre of Learning”. Naimisharanya was such a pious, panoramic and blissful place where the exchange of knowledge, science, and academic meditation took place continuously. Thus, the name “Naimisharanya” is embodied with the knowledge, wisdom, and spirituality of our ancestors.
